This year, the four Courtneys leisure centres in Westminster have
offered free swimming lessons for children between
the ages of 8-16 years old every school holiday
and they are proving to be a great hit. During the 2008 summer
holidays alone, 800 students benefited from the free training. Programmer manager of Courtneys Leisure Centres said: "We aim to
offer children high quality tuition from fully trained instructors
in a fun, safe environment. The programme targets students who are
not achieving the Key Stage 2 standard in their school swimming
lessons.
"The lessons are extremely popular with children and as it is
free, it is great for the parents too!"
The scheme is managed by Swimming Nature and funded by City of
Westminster council. Claire Barnett of Swimming nature said:
"Swimming is a great sport for children to participate in. Not only
does it teach a life saving skill and improve overall fitness, but
swimming also develops independence, self discipline and self
confidence.
"The health benefits of swimming are endless. An enjoyable sport
such as swimming is an excellent way for children to learn early on
in life, that the habit of taking regular exercise helps you keep
fit and maintain a healthy body."
